Editorial Rate Model

Introduction
The editorial rate model is a new method for determining the rates which photographers might charge for editorial assignments and usage. This model links the price that one is paid to the usage derived by the publisher by using the circulation and ad rate to determine the appropriate rates. The model also presents a new method for pricing web images relative to the exact dimensions of the image.

Quote Screen
The spreadsheet consists of two layers, the quote screen and the editorial rate screen. The quote screen contains seven yellow boxes to be modified: magazine circulation, magazine ad rate, currency exchange rate, the quantity of reprints, duration of web usage (in months), and the height and width of the web image (in pixels). Not: the exchange rate box is not shown below.

Simply change the numbers according to the usage required and the result is a printable quote page.

Editorial Rate Screen
The editorial rate screen is much more complex and allows one to see many rates simultaneously. The yellow boxes are algebraic parameters for a power function that control the curve, magnitude and baseline of a given equation. The green boxes hold multipliers to determine the relative prices of space rates to the price of a 1/4 page. The blue boxes are magazine information or other usage information needed to calculate price.

The equation for editorial assignments and space rates are straight forward but the web equation is much more complex because it uses five parameters to calculate the corresponding price. Please note that the web pricing can be calculated to the specific area of the image used. This will help to differentiate the many uses that exist on the web as compared to magazine print.
